Proper Use of Wire Rope Clips
1 – Turn back the specified amount of wire rope over proper size wire rope thimble. (See chart below for turn-back lengths)
2 – Attach the first clip so the U-Bolt is one clip base width from the dead end of the wire rope. The live end of the rope seats in the saddle (clip base). Remember: Live End Saddle, Dead End U-Bolt.
3 – Tighten U-Bolt nuts to the torque value specified in chart.
4 – Attach second clip as close as possible to the loop formed by the thimble. Turn nuts on this clip firmly but do not torque.
5 – Attach additional clips (as specified in chart) evenly between the first two clips.
6 – Tighten all nuts evenly to torque specifications.
7 – Re-torque all nuts after applying the first load to the assembly. Wire Rope Should be inspected and re-torqued periodically.
If some other object is used for rope turn back, at least one additional Wire Rope Clip should be used. The number of clips specified in the chart is based on the use of the following types of new wire rope: “Right Regular” or “Lang Lay” wire rope 6 x 19 class or 6 x 37 class, Fibre Core (FC) or Steel Core (WSC or IWRC)
For wire rope grades not listed above, additional clips may be necessary. Length of rope turn back should be increased when more clips are used.
When properly used, Wire Rope Clips will give an efficiency rating of approximately 80% of the listed breaking strength for the new wire rope.
